Leopards have point to prove to Thunder

Leopards coach Jon Burnell was delighted after seeing his side make it three wins in succession with a 90-71 victory against Tees Valley Mohawks at Wodson Park, on Saturday.

"Tees Valley have showed in their games against Sheffield and Reading that they are a decent side now. They are nothing like the team we played before Christmas, and I was nervous about facing them, especially as they are signing players almost every day. But I was pleased with how we played, and we did a good job to contain their two Americans. They've been scoring 50-60 points per game since they signed, but we contained them with a good team defensive effort. We ended up comfortable winners, and it's nice that the points were shared around, and that we're not relying on one guy. Team-wise we are looking ok. We've got what we need, and although we are struggling a bit with cover at the point guard spot."

The Big Cats face two games this weekend, hosting reigning league champions Worthing Thunder at Wodson Park on Saturday evening (tip-off 7.30pm) before travelling to Solent Stars the following day.

Leopards were hammered 119-74 when they travelled to Sussex in October on a night when they produced arguably their worst display of the season, but Burnell believes they can gain revenge at Wodson. "They aren't invincible, they've lost Steve Vear and his replacement, James Brame is injured. But they've added Danny Hildreth who can do a good job on the point, and the fact that Alfredo Ott scored 42 against Capitals shows what he can do. I believe that if we come up a good game we can beat them. We're not consistent enough, and reflects one me, but we've shown over the last couple of weeks that we're getting there. It's a bit like the game against Capitals , we've been stuffed by them, and we have something to prove."

As well as laying second in the EBL Division One table, Worthing reached the National Cup final where they lost to Manchester, and qualified for the Trophy final with a win against London Capitals on Sunday.

Despite his side travelling to basement side Solent Stars as favourites on Sunday, Burnell still expects them to face a tough test: "They rely on their two Americans, and they're both capable of putting up big numbers. We aren't good on the second game of double headers, but we'll need to go down there and perform. We'll need to pound the ball inside and play some zone."

The two sides have already met this season, and Leopards followed up last year's three victories against the Eastleigh-based side with a 92-78 win - Duncan Ogilvie leading all scorers with 31 points.
